Sneaker culture is now fully embedded in the collectible world, with certain Air Jordans, Yeezys, and designer collabs reaching six-figure resale prices. Collectors are looking for limited releases, exclusive collaborations, and unworn, boxed pairs.

Theatrical artwork
Theatre has a long-standing relationship with societal commentary, and that hasn’t changed. Now, the focus frequently shifts towards contemporary social issues, and cultural representation has become a crucial part of modern productions. Theatrical pieces openly tackle subjects of restoration and change within societies, leveraging the intimate connection between actors and spectators to prompt reflection and dialogue.
Hence the riot, in which infuriated locals smashed up the interior of the theatre mid-performance. Such unrest was a fairly frequent occurrence in 18th-century London — a sign of how seriously the public took its theatre.
Drama unfolds on the stage, and each act reveals the intricacies of storytelling enhanced by the lighting, theatre music, set design, and costume design. The stage is illuminated not just by lights but by the clever use of make-up and sound effects which set the tone and atmosphere.
It was in a bid to capture these celebrities at work that a new artistic genre took off: the theatrical painting. A fine early example is William Hogarth’s 1745 picture of Garrick as Shakespeare’s Richard III (above), the role with which the actor made his name. He is seen in his tent on the eve of the Battle of Bosworth, having woken from a dream in which he is rebuked by the ghosts of his murder victims.

Manet’s scene of picnicking Parisians caused a scandal when it debuted at the Salon des Refusés, the alternative exhibition made up of works rejected by the jurors of the annual Salon—the official art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts that set artistic standards in France. What may appear as another barmaid on the back is actually the reflection of the barmaid on the front. This also sparked debates on the inaccuracy of the reflection that’s way too far to the right. This was another reason for the fame of this painting.
Winslow Homer is popular for developing an inclination towards realism right from the start of his career. The Breezing Up (A Fair Wind) was completed during the centennial of the country and became the most beloved and well-known artistic work in America.
Kandinsky associated his compositions with the music of Schoenberg and saw abstract art as deeply spiritual. Created months after the Russian Revolution, it signals a radical break from past conventions amidst post-war uncertainty in search of new meaning. Composition VIII remains a pivotal, pioneering piece that opened creative possibilities for pure abstraction in 20th-century art.
